From dream to reality
Manhattanite Jerry
Brody was a highly successful entrepreneur and respected businessman,
celebrated for acquiring and transforming New York City’s
Oyster Bar and Gallagher’s Steakhouse into world-renowned
landmarks. Jerry and his wife, Marlene, were attracted to nearby
pastoral Columbia County, bought their first 99 acres of land,
and dreamt of running their very own successful, world-class
farm.
An enthusiastic novice, Jerry took his first step as a “gentleman
farmer” in 1976 when he started his Angus operation by
purchasing “Miss Northern K,” a Calf Champion Heifer
which he and Marlene renamed “Manhattan Gal.” That
first year the Brody’s "gal" went on to become
the breed’s Triple Crown Winner. They also bought 50%
of a bull calf from Sayre Farms which was named Patriot; he
became National Grand Champion Angus Bullquickly placing
Gallagher’s Angus Farm at the forefront of the cattle
industry.
With similar passion, the Brodys bought their first thoroughbred
horse in 1978, and were destined to achieve greatness in the
racing and breeding business. With the creation of Gallagher’s
Stud, the couple visited farms throughout Europe and the U.S.
before selecting the stallions for their roster. Their thorough
research and diligence paid off, resulting in thoroughbreds
that competedand wonat the highest international
levels. In fact, less than 10 years after they began their stud
operation, the Brody’s were named New York’s Outstanding
Breeder of the Year.
Jerry Brody passed away in 2001 at the age of 78, leaving a
legacy of achievement as businessman, farmer, and gentleman.
His wife, Marlene, continues to run the farm, ably assisted
by manager Mallory Mort, Ann Jardine, Bert and Stephanie Poucher
and Mike Ransford. And today, more than a quarter-century later,
Gallagher’s Stud is committed to continuing its race toward
greatness.
If success is measured by professionalism, integrity, and a
commitment to breeding, raising, selling, and racing excellent
athletes. We hope to have the opportunity to race toward greatness
with you. The odds are strong that together we would make a
winning combination.
